What is a Tap and Hold / Tap to Reveal image?

A tap and hold image — also called tap to reveal, click to reveal, an X hidden image or a kakushie (カクシエ, 隠し絵) in Japanese — is a transparent PNG that looks almost blank or faint in the X / Twitter timeline and reveals its full appearance when a viewer taps and holds to enlarge it.

Why does the trick work?

X generates a thumbnail for every uploaded image. For transparent PNGs, it flattens the picture onto a white background. This tool manipulates pixel alpha values so that when blended against white, the image equals a solid white background (or faint line art).

When someone taps to view the image in full screen, X renders the PNG on a black background. The transparent alpha pixels now read against black while the solid pixels show original colors, bringing the hidden picture to life!
